You open Semrush to check one keyword and hit the daily limit. Or the renewal email lands and you wonder what you're paying for. We hit the same wall: on our own Semrush API plan, backlink and related-keyword reports cost 40 API units per row, and extra units are only sold on the Business plan.
So we mapped every job we used Semrush for to a cheaper source and tested each one on our own accounts. These are the Semrush alternatives that held up, what they cost, and the one job none of them can do.

Quick answer: The best Semrush alternatives depend on the job. For your own site, Google Search Console, Keyword Planner and PageSpeed Insights are free and use real data instead of estimates. For competitor keywords and backlinks, a pay-as-you-go data API costs us about $4 to $6 a month. Estimated traffic for any domain still has no free replacement.

What Semrush does that you actually use
Most small teams use three or four Semrush features, not the whole platform, which is why Semrush alternatives can cover the gap. The jobs people pay for are keyword volume and difficulty, rank tracking, competitor keywords, backlinks, site audits, traffic estimates for other domains, and AI visibility.
Before you compare tools, write down which of those seven you used in the last month. That short list is what you're replacing. Everything else on the invoice is software you don't open.
The free tiers are not alternatives
The free versions of the big platforms don't cover real client work. A free Semrush account gives you 10 reports a day and 10 rows in the Keyword Magic Tool, with no export. That's enough to look up one keyword, not to plan a site.
Ahrefs is similar. Keywords Explorer is not in its free tier, and the Ahrefs API and its MCP connection (the bridge that lets AI assistants query Ahrefs data) start at the Lite plan. We checked both vendors' own pages on September 20, 2026.
So a free Semrush alternative isn't another big platform's free plan. It's a handful of smaller tools, most of them free for the one job they do well.
Semrush alternatives by job
Here's the map of Semrush alternatives we built after testing each replacement on our own accounts. Prices and limits were checked on the vendors' pages on September 20, 2026.
| Job | What we use instead | Cost | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyword volume | Google Keyword Planner through the Google Ads API | Free | Needs a Google Ads developer token with Basic access |
| Keyword volume without code | Keywords Everywhere | $84 a year | Browser extension; says its volume comes from Keyword Planner |
| Your rankings and clicks | Google Search Console | Free | Real data, but only for sites you own |
| Your backlinks and site audit | Ahrefs Webmaster Tools | Free | Only for sites you can verify |
| Audit of any site | Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Free up to 500 URLs | Runs on your computer; bigger sites need a licence |
| Authority of any domain | Ahrefs free Domain Rating checker | Free | One number, no backlink list |
| Competitor keywords, SERPs, backlinks | DataForSEO | Pay as you go, $50 minimum deposit | An API, not a dashboard |
| Page speed and Core Web Vitals | PageSpeed Insights API | Free key, 25,000 queries a day | Lab plus field data, one URL per call |
| Visitor behavior | Microsoft Clarity | Free | Heatmaps and recordings, your site only |
| Questions people ask | AlsoAsked | 3 free searches a month, paid from $12 | No volume numbers |
| Traffic estimate for any domain | No free replacement | Semrush Traffic and Market, $289 a month | This is the gap |
That last row is the honest part. If estimated traffic for competitor domains is the one report you can't do without, there's no cheap workaround we could find. Everything else on the list has one.

The free Semrush alternative that saves the most: Keyword Planner's API
The single biggest saving is exact keyword volume from Google's own Keyword Planner, for free. In the web interface, accounts without active ad spend see ranges like "1K to 10K". Through the Google Ads API, the same tool returns the exact monthly number, with no ad spend.
When we pulled numbers for this article, the API returned 1,300 monthly US searches for "semrush alternatives", 480 for "free semrush alternative" and 590 for "ahrefs alternatives". No range, no third-party estimate.
The setup takes an afternoon once:
- Open a Google Ads manager account (free) and request a developer token in its API Center.
- Apply for Basic access. The lower Explorer level blocks the Keyword Planner services, so it won't work for volume.
- Create an OAuth client in Google Cloud and generate a refresh token for the account.
- Call the keyword historical metrics method with your keyword list and the country you want.
If that's more code than you want, Keywords Everywhere puts Keyword Planner-sourced volume in your browser for $84 a year.
"The cheapest SEO data is the data Google already gives you about your own site. Pay only for what Google won't show you."
Semrush alternatives by budget: the $0, $7 and $50 stacks
Start with the free stack of Semrush alternatives, then add one paid piece at a time as your client list grows.
| Stack | Cost | Covers | Missing |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0 | Search Console, Keyword Planner API, PageSpeed Insights, Clarity, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, Screaming Frog (500 URLs) | Your own sites' keywords, rankings, clicks, speed, behavior, backlinks and audits | Competitor backlinks and difficulty scores |
| About $7 a month | Add Keywords Everywhere | Keyword volume while you browse, no API setup | Competitor depth |
| $50 deposit | Add DataForSEO | Competitor keywords, SERPs, backlinks and audits | A dashboard; you work through the API or a tool built on it |
The $50 deposit isn't a monthly bill. At our usage, which is a realistic small-agency month, it lasts roughly 8 to 12 months. People comparing DataForSEO to a subscription often miss that.

What about AI visibility?
AI visibility is the newest job on the list, and none of the free Semrush alternatives does it for you yet. Semrush and Ahrefs both sell AI tracking as a paid add-on, and the free Google tools don't break out which businesses an assistant recommends.
What we do instead costs nothing but an hour a month. We keep a fixed list of prompts a customer would type ("best web designer in Orange County", "who builds websites for plumbers"), run each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode on the same day every month, and log three things in a spreadsheet:
- Whether the business is named in the answer.
- Which competitors are named instead.
- Which pages the answer cites as sources.
The third column is the useful one. The cited pages are where you need to be mentioned next, and it's also where you'll find out whether an AI crawler can read your own site at all. Our study of AI crawlers on 489 local business websites found firewalls quietly refusing them on 14% of sites, which no SEO tool's dashboard will show you.
Keep the prompts the same every month. If you change the wording, you can't tell whether the business moved or the question did.

What we learned testing Semrush alternatives
Keyword Planner's exact numbers through the API were the biggest win, and they cost nothing.
Ahrefs' free Domain Rating endpoint kept working when their paid MCP connection told us "insufficient plan." If you only need a quick authority check, the free checker is enough.
Semrush API units ran out faster than we estimated. Some reports charge per row, and historical snapshots cost five times more per row than current data, so pulling history for a few competitors drains a balance quickly. Run one small call first and read what it cost before you run the rest.
Two tools we planned to test were gone. Keyword Sheeter and Keyword Shitter were offline when we checked, and AnswerThePublic had removed its free tier.
None of these Semrush alternatives replaces judgment. A tool tells you a keyword gets 1,300 searches; it doesn't tell you whether those searchers will hire you. That's why our SEO work starts from what the business sells, then finds the data.
When Semrush is still worth paying for
Semrush earns its price when the work is daily and shared. If you research competitor traffic every day, report to clients from one dashboard, or track AI visibility across many prompts, a stitched-together stack costs more in hours than it saves in dollars.
If you bill clients for SEO every month, the subscription can pay for itself through reporting time alone. The fair answer is that it depends on how many of the seven jobs you run at once and how often. One or two jobs, a few times a month: use the free stack. Five or more jobs, every day, with a team: keep Semrush.
How we use this for clients

Our SEO and white label work runs on these sources, not on a Semrush seat for every person on the team. Clients pay for research and fixes, not for tool licences in the background.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Audit and fix | from $490 |
| Ongoing SEO growth | from $690 a month |
| New website | from $2,490 |
If the audit shows the site itself is the problem (slow, thin pages, no clear service pages), we fix that through web design or web development instead of piling on more keywords. Our SEO cost guide explains what each level of work includes, and the white label rank checking post shows how we report rankings without a paid tracker.
Key takeaways
- Most small teams use three or four of Semrush's seven main jobs, so list yours before you compare tools.
- For your own site, Search Console, Keyword Planner, PageSpeed Insights, Clarity and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools are free and use real data.
- The Keyword Planner API returns exact search volume without ad spend; it needs a developer token with Basic access.
- DataForSEO covers competitor research for about $4 to $6 a month in our use, after a $50 minimum deposit.
- Traffic estimates for other domains have no free replacement among Semrush alternatives; that's where Semrush still wins.
FAQ
Is there a free Semrush alternative?
Not as one platform, but as a stack, yes. Google Search Console, the Keyword Planner API, PageSpeed Insights, Microsoft Clarity and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools cover your own site's keywords, rankings, speed, behavior and backlinks for free. Screaming Frog audits up to 500 URLs of any site at no cost.
What is the cheapest Semrush alternative for competitor research?
DataForSEO, in our testing. It's pay as you go with a $50 minimum deposit and no subscription. A realistic small-agency month of competitor keyword, SERP and backlink checks costs us about $4 to $6, so the deposit lasts roughly 8 to 12 months.
Is Ahrefs better than Semrush?
For most small teams they're closer than the marketing suggests, and both lock the useful parts behind paid plans. Ahrefs' free Webmaster Tools and Domain Rating checker are the better free options, while Semrush's free account allows 10 reports a day with no export.
Can I get exact keyword volume for free?
Yes. Google's Keyword Planner returns exact monthly searches through the Google Ads API without any ad spend. You need a manager account, a developer token with Basic access and an OAuth refresh token. The web interface shows only ranges to accounts without active campaigns.
What is the best Semrush alternative for small agencies?
There isn't one tool. The best Semrush alternatives for a small agency are a combination: the free Google stack covers your own and your clients' verified sites, and DataForSEO adds competitor research for a few dollars a month. Keep Semrush only if you need daily traffic estimates for other domains or one shared reporting dashboard.
Want the research without the tools?
Picking Semrush alternatives is the easy part; knowing which numbers matter for your business is the work. We'll run the same checks on your site that we run for clients and tell you what to fix first, in plain English.
