The median local homepage weighs 2.6 MB; a quarter weigh more than 5 MB. Uncompressed photos and sliders are the usual reason.

Third-party scripts
54% of the bytes on a typical local page come from widgets, trackers, chat boxes and page builders, most of which the visitor never uses.

A page builder on shared hosting
Builders generate heavy markup and load their own libraries on every page; a cheap server adds a second or two before anything starts.

No image sizing
A 4,000-pixel photo scaled down in the browser still has to download in full on a phone.
