You've decided it's time to pay someone for SEO. You search for the best SEO companies for small business and get lists written by the companies on them, usually with themselves at number one and no prices anywhere.

So we did the boring part. On October 18, 2026 we read the websites of 12 SEO companies that rank for small business SEO searches and wrote down what each one publishes: starting price, what the first six months really cost, contract length, setup fees, and whether they actually serve small businesses.

Most owners compare SEO companies with three quotes and no common yardstick. This post is the yardstick.

Quick answer: Of 12 SEO companies we checked, 8 publish a starting price: from $299 to $3,000 a month, median about $1,550. Three require a 6 or 12 month minimum. The cheapest plans are self-guided or narrow, and the headline price can hide a pricier first two months. Compare the first six months' total, the contract and who owns the site.

How we checked

We only used what each company publishes on its own website.

  • Date: every page read on October 18, 2026. Prices change; check the source before you sign.
  • No sales calls: we didn't phone, email or request a quote from anyone.
  • Who: the companies that rank for searches like "small business seo services" and "seo companies for small business" in our keyword research, plus three well-known small business SEO providers.
  • One gap: Coalition Technologies blocked our checker on every page, so it's listed but not scored.

This isn't a ranking, and nobody here paid to be included. It's a side-by-side of what 12 companies say about their own pricing and terms.

Disclosure: RankMeHi wrote this post and sells small business SEO services. We're in the table at the end on the same criteria as everyone else.

"Not stated" means it wasn't on the pages we read, not that it doesn't exist. Ask.

What the numbers say:

  1. 8 of 12 publish a price. Four make you talk to sales first.
  2. The published range is $299 to $3,000 a month. The median is about $1,550.
  3. The cheapest entries are narrow. Boostability's $299 plan is self-guided; its done-for-you plan is $600.
  4. 3 of 12 require a minimum term: WebFX 6 months, Hook and Scorpion 12 months for SEO.
  5. Only Pronto publishes a separate setup fee ($775 to $975 by plan).

What the headline price hides

A starting price tells you little about what the first six months cost. Three things stood out.

The first months can cost more than the monthly fee. WebFX's small business page says "starting at $2,900/month". Its own tier table shows the first two months priced at $8,600 together, under a 6-month commitment. That's $20,200 for the first six months, about $3,367 a month on average, not $17,400.

Who owns the website matters when you leave. Scorpion's FAQ says you keep your domain, content and design files, but its content management system stays with Scorpion, so the site has to be rebuilt elsewhere. That's a cost to price in on day one, not at cancellation.

Ad spend sits on top. Where it's mentioned (Thrive's form, Hook's PPC pricing), the ad budget is separate from the management fee. Any quote that bundles SEO with Google Ads should split the two.

The monthly price is the headline. The term, the first two months and who owns the site are in the small print.

Some companies that rank for "small business" don't target small businesses. Hook says it works with contractors doing $3M to $15M a year and not early-stage businesses. Searchbloom says its focus leans toward mid-market and enterprise. Both are honest about it; read the fit before you book a call.

A price that starts in month three is not a starting price.

Which type of SEO company fits which small business

Monthly budgetWhat you typically getFits
Under $700Self-guided tools, listings, or a narrow done-for-you plan (Boostability, Thrive's small business plan, LYFE's entry level)One location, tight budget, owner willing to do some work
$700 to $2,000Hands-on local SEO: profile, citations, some content (Pronto, LYFE's upper range, OuterBox Essentials, RankMeHi)A local business ready to pay for steady work and expecting enquiries in return
$2,000 to $3,000+Full-service SEO with an account team (Hook, WebFX, Searchbloom)Multiple locations or a revenue base that can absorb a 6 to 12 month term
Quote onlyPrice set after a sales conversation (Blue Corona, Scorpion, HigherVisibility, Local SEO VA)Owners happy to go through a proposal before seeing a number

Cheap isn't the same as affordable. A $300 plan that only submits directory listings and never touches your website can cost more than a $700 plan that fixes the page customers actually land on. Our breakdown of what SEO costs goes through each price band in more detail.

What we'd check before comparing prices at all

A price only means something next to what your site needs. In our study of 662 local business websites, 41% of live sites missed at least one basic way to become a lead: a tappable phone number, a form, a mobile layout or HTTPS. 39% ran no analytics, so they couldn't tell which page brought calls.

If your site has those gaps, the best SEO company for you is the one that fixes them first, and changes your site rather than sending recommendations. That's often a web design or web development job before it's an SEO job. And if your name, address and phone don't match across listings, start with local citations.

RankMeHi: where we fit

We wrote this post, so here's our own entry on the same criteria.

  • Price: audit and fix from $490 one-off after a free audit; ongoing SEO from $690 a month.
  • Term: month to month, cancel any time. No setup fee.
  • Pay per lead: for local service businesses, $490 setup and $99 a month, then from $20 per approved lead set by trade. First three approved leads free; reject any lead within 7 days.
  • Who does the work: the same small team builds the site and does the local SEO and technical SEO, so fixes ship on your site.
  • Proof with numbers: Aria Glass, a glass contractor near Seattle, logged 41 quote requests in its first 12 months on our site and 192 in the last 12 (September 2025 to August 2026), 368% more a month, counted in JotForm. Details in our case studies.

We're not the right pick for everyone. If you need hundreds of articles a month for a national market, a larger agency fits better. If your phone already rings more than you can answer, you don't need SEO yet.

Ask every company the same ten questions, and write the answers down.

10 questions to ask any SEO company before you sign

  1. What's the total for the first six months, including onboarding or setup?
  2. Is there a minimum term, and what happens if I leave early?
  3. Will I own the website, the content and the platform it runs on?
  4. What exactly do I get each month: pages, fixes, links, reports?
  5. Do you change my website, or only send recommendations?
  6. Is ad spend included, or billed separately?
  7. Can you show a client result with a starting number, an end number and dates?
  8. What does the monthly report measure: calls and forms, or only rankings?
  9. Do most of your clients look like my business in size and revenue?
  10. What's the first thing you'd fix on my site, and why?

Red flags

  • Guaranteed rankings or "page one in 30 days". Google says plainly in its guide to hiring an SEO that no one can guarantee a number one ranking.
  • No end date or cancellation terms in the contract.
  • Results shown only as percentages, with no starting number or date range.
  • Pressure to sign before you have a written, itemized quote.
  • A site locked to their platform with no clear way to take it with you.
  • Bulk links or thousands of directory submissions as the main deliverable.

When you shouldn't hire an SEO company yet

Busy small shop counter with the owner serving customers
SEO is worth paying for when you can handle the customers it brings.

If you can't handle more customers right now, more traffic won't help. A flood of calls nobody answers isn't growth.

If your website has no working phone link or quote form, fix that first. None of the prices above matter if a visitor can't reach you.

And if you don't know what a new customer is worth, work that out before comparing quotes. Every price is easier to judge once you know your average job value and what you can afford to pay for one new customer.

Key takeaways

  • 8 of 12 SEO companies we checked publish a price: $299 to $3,000 a month, median about $1,550.
  • Compare the first six months' total, not the headline monthly price.
  • 3 of 12 require a 6 or 12 month minimum; ask who owns the site when you leave.
  • Some companies ranking for small business SEO say they target bigger firms.
  • Fix your site's lead basics first; the best SEO company for you is one that changes your site.

FAQ

How much does SEO cost for a small business?

Among the 8 companies in our check that publish a price, starting costs ran from $299 to $3,000 a month, with a median of about $1,550 (October 18, 2026). Self-guided plans sit at the low end. With us, ongoing SEO starts at $690 a month, month to month.

What are the best SEO companies for small business?

The best fit depends on budget and size. Under $700 a month, look at small-business plans from Boostability, Thrive or LYFE. Between $700 and $2,000, hands-on local SEO from Pronto, OuterBox or us. Above that, full-service agencies like WebFX or Hook, which suit larger businesses.

How long are SEO contracts?

Of the 12 companies we checked, 3 require a minimum: WebFX 6 months, Hook and Scorpion 12 months for SEO. Six say month to month or no long-term contract. The rest don't state a term on their site, so ask before you sign.

Are there hidden costs beyond the monthly fee?

Often. First months can be priced higher, as with WebFX's first two months. Setup fees exist; Pronto publishes $775 to $975. Ad spend is billed on top where it's mentioned. And if the company keeps your site's platform, leaving means paying for a rebuild.

Is affordable SEO for a small business worth it?

Yes, if the plan changes your website and reports calls and forms. A cheap plan that only builds listings or sends recommendations often isn't. Check that the company fixes the pages customers land on and measures enquiries, not only rankings.

Choose on the six-month total, not the headline

The best SEO company for your small business is the one whose first six months you can afford, whose contract you can leave, and whose work changes the pages your customers actually see. Put every quote through the ten questions above and compare the totals side by side.
